Hello all, have we all read the amazing book by Betty Irabor titled “Dust To Dew”.
On this book, she talked about her struggles with depression, mental issues, as well as other issues that has affected her life.
In our daily lives today, we find out that a lot of people are passing through emotional and psychological problems which gives birth to depression. Depression is the feeling of severe despondency and dejection, so it doesn’t matter the class of which one belongs to. Depression is no respecter of persons.
Depression is a serious illness. Its equivalent to one having mental health issues, although the stigma of depression is different from that of other mental illnesses and largely due to the negative nature of the illness that makes depressives seem unattractive and unreliable. Self-stigmatization makes people shameful and secretive which can prevent proper advice, help or treatment. It may also cause somatization.
There are different types of depression, which are: mild depression, major depression, bi-polar disorder, post-natal depression and seasonal active disorder
But the good thing is that, depression can be controlled having the right support, proper medical attention/advice and right people around.
Dust To Dew will enlighten your mind and act as a good support to enable you overcome the issues that you might be facing.
According to Betty Irabor, “Sharing my story on my fight with depression is me being audacious. Hopefully, it will shine a ray of hope to those trapped in that same dark tunnel where I was a prisoner for 7 years,”
“Dust is chaos, Dust blinds, it inhibits. Dew is Life, it is Hope, it is New Beginnings”, she said
An excerpt from the book reads:
“…I heard the voice again, you’re no good. I tried to ignore it but it wouldn’t go unheard. You are nothing; you are just a big fat failure! The hand of trauma is long and strong, stretching over decades and slowly choking out life, as it demands to be dealt with.
With those words ricocheting around my head, I climbed back into bed and slid the duvet over my head. I could still hear it, so I got up and adjusted the curtains until I could not see a glimmer of light. I felt my way along the walls and back to my bed, where I pulled the duvet over my head again. At last, the darkness that enveloped the room matched my world”.
Dust To Dew will take your mind and attention to issues that you have neglected. Depression is very suicidal. You can get help by attending therapy section such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychotherapy and some forms of counselling. In some cases Anti- depressants can be recommended by a therapist.
Counselling gives people the chance to talk through everyday issues that may be causing depression and to develop strategies for resolving them.
Understanding Depression as well as mental illness in Nigeria is something that has to be taken contextually and historically. Many Nigerians have misconceptions, misbeliefs and misinformation about Depression, hence stigmatize people with Depression or mental illness.
In Africa, we take Depression to be mare feelings but remember that Depression is a common mental disorder that causes people to experience depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure, feelings of guilt or low self-worth, disturbed sleep or appetite, low energy, and poor concentration. It is also a serious mental health.
A person experiencing depression will experience intense emotions of anxiety, hopelessness, negativity and helplessness, and the feelings stay with them instead of going away.
