HOW TO NAIL AN ONLINE INTERVIEW

We are thankful to have survived the lock down, though we lost so many people and businesses. Welcome back to our platform where we strategically talk about ways to improve ones’ self, business and career. The pandemic has brought about new ways of doing business, and also, enforced digital strategies that have always been in existence.

What does an online interview entail?

An online interview is an online research method conducted using computer-mediated communication (CMC) such as instant messaging, email, or video – Wikipedia

Online interviews have been in existence, and have been an effective means of interviewing. In this new era of pandemic, online interviews have taken precedence to in-person interviews.

There are various ways you can nail an online interview irrespective of your location or circumstance. Preparation is the key to succeed in an interview, whether it is in-person or virtual.

Here’s how to nail an online interview:

  1. The Standard Rules Still Apply: You must bear in mind that you are going to war to fight for a spot coveted by other smart people as well. It’s easy to take things for granted because you don’t get to see who your competitors are. Just because you are on a virtual platform doesn’t mean you can slack off on your conduct. Dress as though you were going in-person, have your writing materials and be ready to put your best foot forward.

  2. Use of Technology: Ask the employer or organization what video platform they will be using when an interview is scheduled. Spend quality time to familiarize yourself on how it works in case you need to use any features. “Practice makes perfect” record yourself answering some possible interview questions to polish your interviewing skills. Test run the device and your internet connection hours to the scheduled time. Set up the best possible circumstance for the technology to work by ensuring that no one streams TV.

  3. Silence or Eliminate Distractions: Close any nearby doors or windows to eliminate noise and find a room with optimal lighting. Turn off the TV, Radio and silence or switch off your cell phone except you are using it for the interview (make sure your phone is on Airplane mode). Silence all pop-ups and ensure the only window open on your computer (device) screen is the video platform you are using. The aim is to stay focused because the last thing you want is to lose your train of thought.

  4. Be Cheerful: The way you are perceived matters a lot. Though, it might be hard to have a cheerful and energetic virtual conversation especially when you are indoors, this factor is very essential. Energy and passion are some of the things interviewers look out for, so try and get in the mood to talk before your interview begins. You can do some dancing or listen to music, in order to level up your energy and to calm your nerves. During an interview, ensure that you look into the camera at all times.

Most individuals lost their jobs during this global pandemic. While scouting for possible job openings, be sure to be prepared because, the recruitment process has changed and opportunity does not waste time with those who are unprepared. Theodore Roosevelt said, “It is not often that a man can make opportunities for himself. But he can put himself in such shape that when or if the opportunities come he is ready.” Good Luck!
